All of our scholarship applicants, not only the winners, have proven their fortitude and devotion to the goal of bettering their lives through higher education. Our applicants have come from many different backgrounds and faced many difficulties already; living in foster homes, single-parent families, living with grandparents and more. One student emancipated from their parents and was living on their own, attending high school, working a part time job and making very good grades.
To date, LPDF has awarded thirty-eight scholarships of varying dollar amounts for a total of $117,500 to students from eleven different high schools in the New River and Roanoke Valley areas: Auburn, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford, Wm. Fleming, Giles, Cave Springs, Pulaski County, East Montgomery, Salem, Wm. Byrd, Northside, George Wythe, the Roanoke Valley Governors School, and the SWVA Governor’s School.
In 2019, the LPDF board decided to award $5,000 scholarships to two individual students and to donate $10,000 to the New River Community College ACCE program. The board has been so impressed with ACCE program that they donated $20,000 to the program and voted to discontinue the awarding of individual scholarships.
Our hope is that these scholarships help each student achieve their dreams whatever that may be and wherever that may lead.
